Training this sunday & more volunteers needed at Subrosa!

teapotSubrosa is a new cafe and social centre which can be used for community events, meetings, film screenings, social events & more. We are entirely volunteer run and all our members have an equal say in what we do. Have a read if you are interested in getting involved – we have a volunteer training event on Sunday 1st June so it’s a good time to start! :)

As a non-profit organisation we depend upon the work of volunteers and willing contributors who share our vision. There are many tasks that need undertaking to keep Subrosa going, but by getting involved, you will be joining a network of people passionate about the community and the values of mutual aid and autonomy.

Subrosa is run entirely by volunteers, if you are interested in helping out in the space and doing a shift behind the counter please get in touch! You don’t need any special skills – helping out can be a great way to learn new things (in particular about vegan cakes!) & meet new people. If you are interested please fill in our volunteer form and email it to volunteers@manchestersocialcentre.org.uk, or email us your name, contact details and availability.

Wednesday 14th May 7pm

Calais Migrant Solidarity have been doing solidarity work with some of the hundreds of migrants in Calais on a daily basis since June 2009. Following the No Borders Camp in June 2009, French, British, Belgian, Dutch, German and Italian activists set up a permanent presence in Calais. We do a variety of activities, aimed at showing resistance to the police harassment of migrants, raising awareness about the situation in Calais, showing solidarity with the migrants, as well as simply trying to make people’s lives easier. We are overtly political and in the long run we aim to build a stronger transnational movement against migration controls, comprised of those with and those without papers.

There are currently extremely high levels of migrants in Calais, in part caused by England’s aggressive foreign policy. People are arriving are in increasingly vulnerable situations with a rise in pregnant women and children, whilst police violence is increasing, the squats are under attack from local far-Right groups and the French Authorities pursue a policy of enforced destitution  in an attempt to discourage migration.

No Borders and the people they support urgently need more help. Come and hear from some of the activists who have stayed in Calais and find out how you can support and be in solidarity.

Donations of items desperately needed will be collected on the night for a mission going over to Calais. Please bring along any of the following items:
Tents
sleeping bags & blankets
men’s clothes (sporty not formal): jeans, jackets, pulls, T-shirts, hats, socks, underwear, waterproofs (jackets rather than ponchos)
shoes (sporty/trainers)
small rucksacks and bags
tarpaulin
food (unperishable; not expired)
tea,
sugar
plates, cups, cutlery (both plastic and real ones)
toiletries
cameras
English sim cards (Lyca)

Emergency Situation in Calais – Urgent Request for Help
There are extremely high numbers of migrants in Calais waiting for safe passage, living in terrible conditions due to the French authorities’ policy of enforced destitution. No Borders remain present and active, but need donations of the most basic provisions to help the communities in Calais.
