Calais Migrant Solidarity have been doing solidarity work with some of the hundreds of migrants in Calais on a daily basis since June 2009. Following the No Borders Camp in June 2009, French, British, Belgian, Dutch, German and Italian activists set up a permanent presence in Calais. We do a variety of activities, aimed at showing resistance to the police harassment of migrants, raising awareness about the situation in Calais, showing solidarity with the migrants, as well as simply trying to make people’s lives easier. We are overtly political and in the long run we aim to build a stronger transnational movement against migration controls, comprised of those with and those without papers.

There are currently extremely high levels of migrants in Calais, in part caused by England’s aggressive foreign policy. People are arriving are in increasingly vulnerable situations with a rise in pregnant women and children, whilst police violence is increasing, the squats are under attack from local far-Right groups and the French Authorities pursue a policy of enforced destitution  in an attempt to discourage migration.

No Borders and the people they support urgently need more help. Come and hear from some of the activists who have stayed in Calais and find out how you can support and be in solidarity.

Donations of items desperately needed will be collected on the night for a mission going over to Calais. Please bring along any of the following items:
Tents
sleeping bags & blankets
men’s clothes (sporty not formal): jeans, jackets, pulls, T-shirts, hats, socks, underwear, waterproofs (jackets rather than ponchos)
shoes (sporty/trainers)
small rucksacks and bags
tarpaulin
food (unperishable; not expired)
tea,
sugar
plates, cups, cutlery (both plastic and real ones)
toiletries
cameras
English sim cards (Lyca)

There are extremely high numbers of migrants in Calais waiting for safe passage, living in terrible conditions due to the French authorities’ policy of enforced destitution. No Borders remain present and active, but need donations of the most basic provisions to help the communities in Calais.

Subrosa, Manchester’s new social centre officially opened it’s doors over the weekend with a busy first day on Saturday attracting over 150 throughout the day! We’ve been working hard getting the space ready over the past few weeks, and after a burst of activity on our workday (and night!) on Friday the space was transformed in time for Saturday. We had a packed day with tea, cake and delicious food, as well as crafts, music from Oh man, the mountain, stories, and magic to keep everyone entertained.

We also had talks about the Basement (a previous social centre that closed in 2007) and various temporary social centre projects in Manchester which gave the history and background to Subrosa.

We Need a Name!

1622664_705174072855616_319339768_nHello!

Do you remember that ‘quid’ you lent us… well.. We spent it!!! The public face of Manchester Social Centre has been very quiet for a while now.. but behind the closed doors of a certain few houses in Manchester, some meticulous plotting and planning has been taking place..

We can now confirm that we have waded through a sufficient amount of contractual and legal negotiation, enough to blast MSC into the realm of officialdom! We have signed the lease on a building – it’s 27 Lloyd Street South in Moss Side!

First things first, I think you will all agree that this ‘place’ cannot be called Manchester Social Centre.. One reason being, it reminds us of those meetings that began all those years ago.. In dark basements, dingy pubs, hopes and dreams that were battered in the winds of bureaucracy.. Hmm, so… we need a name, and whats it to be?

We are asking you to come up with a name for this new cafe/radical social centre/insurrectionary hub of actions and ideas.. The suggestions (all greatly appreciated, please! thankyou!) will be documented and we will decide officially next week. Please email manchestersocialcentre(at)gmail.com with suggestions or post them here, we will collect and collate. Cheers!
